Critical Race Theory

Critical Race Theory - A school of thought that maintains that because legal and social structures in western civilization were mostly created and executed by white people, there is inherent racial prejudice in many of these areas.

Richard Delgado is one of the founders of the critical race theory.

Jane Stefancic (wife) also a professor (law school professor)

  • Professor and writer

  • Taught courses of race

  • Law school professor

Aberrational - a characteristic that deviates from the normal type; abnormal.

Psychically - relating to the soul or mind.

Brainwashed (Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority) - Tom Burrell (Book)

  • Interest convergence means that when it comes to race, things often change or improve only when it benefits those in power, usually white people. So, changes like civil rights victories might happen because they also help white people, not just because they're fair or right.

  • Socially constructed race means that society decides what race means. It's like we learn about race from the people around us and the things we see in the world, but it's not something we're born with. So, race isn't something that's naturally part of us; it's more like something we learn from the world around us.

  • Intersectionality (Kimberlé Crenshaw) - Intersectionality suggests that individuals' experiences and opportunities are shaped not just by one aspect of their identity, but by the overlapping and interconnected nature of various social identities, such as race, gender, class, sexuality, and ability. It underscores the importance of considering the intersections of these identities to fully understand how systems of power and privilege operate in society.
